Description:
Black and white photograph of Elizabeth Prince Child. She is photographed inside of the Sheldon House on North Street in Litchfield. She lived in this home with her first cousin once removed, Lucy Sheldon Beach, after Elizabeth's husband died. Elizabeth continued to occupy the home after Lucy's death in 1889 and lived there until her own death in 1904.
According to information received with the photograph, the diamond-shaped frame behind Mrs. Child encloses a section of a hand-stenciled decoration which originally covered the hall walls. Shortly before the photograph was taken, the stenciling was discovered when old wallpaper was removed. Mrs. Child had a section of it preserved prior to installing new paper.
