Description:
The Butler Family Papers include letters written by Litchfield Law School student James McElhenney to his friend Anthony Wayne Butler while McElhenney was a student in Litchfield and Butler was at Yale. One letter provides Butler with explicit detail of Gould's teaching style, and reasons McElhenney finds it far superior to reading law in an office.

Butler, a ward of President Andrew Jackson, later concluded to study law in Litchfield but died of yellow fever on his journey to Litchfield.
