Biographical Notes:
Rufus King was born in Scarborough, MA (now part of Maine). He studied law, participated in the Revolutionary War, and was a delegate to the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention. He married Mary Alsop of NY and relocated there. He became active in politics and served as a director of the first bank of the United States; a U.S. Senator; and a minister to Great Britain. He ran for the presidency as a federalist, but lost to James Monroe.
