Biographical Notes:
Mary Galloway Maxcy was the only child of John Galloway and Sarah Chew, daughter of Philadelphia lawyer Benjamin Chew. Mary inherited Tulip Hill, her family's Maryland plantation, where the Maxcys resided. Her father was a slave trader, and their estate, still privately owned, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
