Biographical Notes:
Born to Richard and Eliza Wayne. Her father arrived in America from Yorkshire, England, in 1759, and set up a merchant business in Charleston, South Carolina. The family moved to Savannah in 1790. Through her daughter, Sarah Anderson Stites Gordon, Mary was the great-grandmother of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the U.S. Girl Guides (later known as the Girl Scouts of America).
