Biographical Notes:
Pheobe Jefferson (Gurnsey) Webber, daughter of Joseph Gurnsey and Phoebe Jefferson, was born in Rochester, VT in 1809.

Her father was a Justice of the Peace and her mother is thought to be a descendant of one of Thomas Jefferson’s cousins.Her brother was Dr. Henry Newall Gurnsey who practiced Homeopathic Medicine in Philadelphia.

The Jefferson connection is noted in Cleaves Biographical Cyclopedia of Homeopathic Physicians and Surgeons, By Egbert Cleave and presented by Syvain Cazilet.

Phoebe was a wife and mother who spent much of her time taking care of her children. References to that are noted in a letter from her brother when he graduated from the NYU Medical College in 1844.

Her tombstone reads, “Phoebe J., wife of Sumner A. Webber, died Sept 29, 1860 in her 51st year.”
