Biographical Notes:
James Backus was born on July 14, 1764 in Norwich, Connecticut. As a young man James worked as a merchant. In 1788, after traveling to Ohio, he founded the town of Marietta in the territory. While residing in Ohio James not only worked as a surveyor of the land and erected the first frame house to be built in Ohio, but he also ooperated the territorry's first grist mill, saw mill, and woolen mill. In 1791 James returned to Norwich, Connecticut to run his father's iron works business. Two years later in 1793 he married Dorothy Chandler, and the couple had several children during their marriage. On September 29, 1816 James passed away.
