Biographical Notes:
Joel Scranton was born in Belchertown, MA to Stephen and Ascenath Scranton in 1793. He migrated to Cleveland in 1819 and became a merchant. He invested in land, purchasing a large tract that became known as Scranton Flats. He married Irene Hickox in 1828 with whom he had six children.
