Biographical Notes:
Theodosia Bartow Prevost Burr was the daughter of Rev. Theodosius Bartow (1712-1746) and Alice Anne Stillwell. In 1763 she married James Mark Prevost, an officer in the British Army with whom she had five children. While Aaron Burr served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, he met Theodosia while Washington's army encamped at her home, The Hermitage, in July 1778. The couple kept up a frequent correspondence that sparked controversy as she was still married at the time. Theodosia was highly educated and noted for possessing a sharp wit, frequently discussing the works of Rousseau, Voltaire, and Mary Wollstonecraft in letters exchanged with Aaron.
