Biographical Notes:
James Ballard, son of William and Elizabeth Whitney Ballard of Charlemont, Massachusetts, was born on April 20, 1805. He graduated from William College in 1828, and also studied with Reverend Nathan Beeman of Troy, New York. Upon completing his education James entered into the ministry. Not only did he serve as a minister during his lifetime, but he also worked as an educator as well and ran a classical seminary in Bennington, Vermont for about ten years. In 1831 James married Emmeline Hinsdale, and they had three children during their marriage. In 1837 the couple moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where James served as the first Pastor of the Congo Church.
