Biographical Notes:
Mary Sebor Sheldon was born on March 24, 1798 to Jacob and Elizabeth Winthrop Sebor of Middletown, Connecticut. In 1813 Mary attended Rev. Claus Herrick's female school in New Haven, Connecticut. It is also believed that she may have attended the Litchfield Female Academy. On October 17, 1820 she married Frederick Sheldon of New York City. During their marriage Frederick worked as a businessman and the couple had two children. On November 14, 1850, at the age of fifty-two, Mary passed away from breast cancer.
