Biographical Notes:
William Croghan was born in 1752, and emigrated from Dublin to Philadelphia with his uncle, Colonel George Croghan, the deputy Indian agent. He worked for merchants in New York and Albany, before relocating to western Pennsylvania in 1774 and joining the military. Major Croghan was present at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. After being captured in Charleston, S.C. in 1780, he met Lucy Clark, the sister of Generals George Rogers and William Clark, while on parole. They married in 1789. In 1783 George Rogers Clark and William Croghan became surveying partners for the Virginia State line. In 1784, he was commissioned by Virginia to survey public lands in Kentucky.
