Foot, and an undated daguerreotype of Foote. His letters were written from Washington, D.C., and various military sites in Maryland, Virginia, and other locations. A member of the 1st Michigan Cavalry Regiment, Maynard writes about events of the war and aspects of daily life on a campaign.
