Biographical Notes:
Esther Strangways Palmer was the oldest child of John Grover Palmer and Dorothy Ball Palmer. Her place of birth is unknown, but her father's ancestral home was Banemore House in Ireland. Her family also resided in England and Bermuda at various times. She married James Christie Esten of Bermuda in 1800. She died in Canada, where her son resided, in 1849.
Esther's younger sister Frances, or Fanny, married Charles John Austen, the brother of novelist Jane Austen. Some of their surviving correspondence is at the Morgan Library in New York.
