Biographical Notes:
Joshua Porter was graduated from Yale in 1751. He taught school in New Bern, NC for on year. He then returned to Connecticut and studied medicine in Coventry with Dr. Josiah Rose. He practiced in Lebanon until 1757 when he removed to Salisbury, CT. In 1759 he married Abigail Buell with whom he had six children. Following her death, he married Jerusha Fitch, widow of Hezekiah Fitch and daughter of Col. Burr of Fairfield. She died in February, 1808. He married Lucy Ashley Dutcher, widow of Samuel Dutcher and daughter of Col. John Ashley, the following August. She died in 1815.
In addition to the practice of medicine, Porter farmed and manufactured potash. He served in numerous public offices and commanded a regiment during the Revolutionary War.
