Biographical Notes:
Sarah Sterret Stevens was born and raised in Albemarle County, Virginia. As a young woman she married farmer Robert Sterret. In 1816 the Sterret's moved from the Kentucky area to Montgomery County, Alabama - one of the first families to settle in the area. Within a year Robert Sterret died, leaving Sarah a widow to care for their three sons. Although the exact date is not known, within two years Sarah had married Henry Wilbourne Stevens and the couple was residing with Sarah's three children in her home. It is likely that Henry Stevens met Sarah in the orphan court where he served as the register, where in June of 1817 Sarah petitioned to become the administratrix of her recently deceased husband's estate.
