Biographical Notes:
Calvin Stowe was born August 6, 1802. In 1824 he graduated with honors from Bowdoin College and in 1828 he graduated from Andover Theological Seminary. In 1829 he became editor of the Boston Recorder, the oldest religious newspaper in the US. By 1830 he was appointed professor of Greek at Dartmouth College. In 1832 he married Eliza Tyler and they moved to Walnut Hills, Ohio where Stowe had been hired as the professor of sacred literature at Lane Theological Seminary. His wife died in 1834, and in January 1836 he married Harriet Beecher, the daughter of the president of the Seminary who had been a close friend of his first wife. Together they had seven children.
From 1850-52 he taught at Bowdoin College and from 1852-1864 he was at Andover Theological Seminary. In 1864, suffering from declining health, Calvin and Harriet moved to Hartford, CT. He died August 22, 1886.
