Biographical Notes:
Born in 1774 in Hadley, MA, Betsey Colt Foote was the wife of Ebenezer Foote, an Albany, New York lawyer, politician, and educator. To make a better education available to their only daughter Lucretia, in February 1814, she and her husband, founded the Union School which became the Albany Female Academy and then the Albany Academy for Girls. The original school was on leased land on the east side of Montgomery Street near their home. Betsey's husband, Ebenezer was the school's first treasurer. In 1847 Betsey died in Ballston Spa, NY.
