Biographical Notes:
James Averell was born in Ashford, Conn where he lived in his youth, moving to Palmer, Mass., and Wilmington, Vt., before he settled in Cooperstown, N. Y in 1787. He served in the Continental Army from Palmer, MA. In 1792 he exchanged his initial Cooperstown property for a tannery He and his son William Holt Averell invested in land in Cleveland, OH. He died away from home at St. Johnsville NY in 1835.
