Biographical Notes:
Mary Ann Dickinson Smith was born in 1822 to William and Mary Ann Wright Walker of New York. After her parent's death Mary Ann and her brother William were adopted by family friends Anson Dickinson and his wife Sarah Brown.
Mary Ann married her husband Truman Smith in Seclusion, Alabama where she was working as a governess at the time. The couple had six sons including one set of twins. Only three of their children lived to adulthood.
