Biographical Notes:
James Orton was the son of Thomas Orton (disputed in his parents divorce) and Ann Dix. After his parents divorce and his father's death, he was raised by his step-mother, Sarah Atwood, and her second husband, Col. Giles Jackson of Woodbury, CT. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1787. He married his wife Electra Graves, daughter of Moses Graves, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1792. He was appointed judge to the county courts. For a time he lived in Litchfield, New York, which had been settled by a number of residents of Litchfield, Connecticut. Two of his daughters attended the Litchfield Female Academy and both died within a month and half of one another.
