Miles Dunbar, Sr. was born on May 15, 1756, likely in Plymouth, Connecticut. He served in the Revolutionary War for three years as a Fife Major. Miles, Sr. likely met his wife, Tryphosa Butler, through church, as both were members of the Northbury Society, now known as the Pilgrim Congregational Church. He likely joined the Society around July 1776. On May 3, 1779, Tryphosa married Miles Dunbar, Sr. in while he was on furlough. The couple had eight children: Isaiah, John, Miles, Jr., Clarissa, Butler, Lucretia, Zenas, and Calvin. All of them were raised in Plymouth. In 1809, Tryphosa and Miles, Sr. moved west to the area of Syracuse, New York; by 1819, they had settled in Volney, Oswego County, New York as members of the First Congregational Church of Volney alongside Miles, Jr.'s brother Zenas and his wife Lydia Dunbar. He died on November 12, 1837 at the age of 81 in Volney.
